Now Free of Debt.
Blaydon Church Dedicated after 25 Years.

Erected twenty five years ago at a cost of about £9,000 St. Joseph's Roman Catholic church, Blaydon has been freed from debt and on Saturday the Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle (Dr. Thorman) performed the ceremony of dedicating the church which has been redecorated and had a new alter added. The parishioners had worked hard with their Rector (Fr. Gregory Pippet) to wipe off the debt on the handsome edifice.
Officials at the ceremony were: Deacon Fr. Fleming (Chopwell), sub-Deacon Fr. Coutts (Blaydon), Priest of mass, Fr. Doyle (Blaydon), Guardian Deacon Fr. McMenemy (Highfield), bearers of relics Fr. Savoury (Bells Close), Fr. Walsh (Prudhoe), Fr. Swales (Stella), and Fr. Pickering (Dunston). Master of Ceremonies Canon Chadwick, Alnwick; Cross bearer Fr. Wadsworth, St Cuthbert's Grammar School, Newcastle.
The Bishop first blessed the outside of the wall of the church and then the inside after which the relics were brought from the private chapel and carried into the church. Before entering the Bishop anointed the door posts of the church with Chrism oil.
The relics were enshrined in the new alter which was consecrated. The twelve crosses were inlet into the walls of the church and consecrated as also was the new alter furniture. The proceedings lasted over three hours.
